GREENING OUR FACILITY
In 2007 SunDog Solar invested $250,000 in the development of the first carbon-neutral 20,000 sq ft manufacturing and office facility in Columbia County. We produce electricity from our 12.6kW photovoltaic (pv) system and generate hot water from an array of solar thermal collectors. We even heat our facility with a vegetable oil boiler utilizing fryer oil collected from local restaurants! The vehicles used for installations are powered by bio diesel fuel.

Our 12.6kW Photovoltaic (pv) System
This system consists of: 12.6kW utility-tied pv system; (72) 175W modules – eight pole-mounted arrays consisting of (9) modules each; and (4) Xantrex Inverters.

The system is estimated to generate an annual output of 18,836 kW/year and offsets our electricity consumption. That’s the equivalent of not driving 20,622 miles, with an environmental benefit equivalent to planting a football field of trees – each year for the next 25 years!

Federal tax credits and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) helped to fund this project.

Our Vegetable Oil Boiler
In August 2006, we initiated a waste vegetable oil recycling program. Each week, we collect waste vegetable fryer oil from 20 local restaurants and convert it into a renewable energy source. The filtered oil is used for heat via a waste vegetable oil boiler and a 60kw generator.

Solaqua Power & Art Research and Development Project
A solar thermal demonstration project is underway at the Solaqua campus comparing two solar thermal collector technologies: flat plate and evacuated tubes solar thermal collectors.

Array 1: (2) sets of 20 evacuated tube collectors
Array 2: hybrid system consisting of (1) set of 20 evacuated tube collectors & (1) flat plate panel
Array 3: (2) flat plate panels

The three arrays function side-by-side at the same height and angle and are monitored throughout the day. This system will provide a substantial portion of the annual space heat and domestic hot water requirements for the offices of Kling Magnetics and SunDog Solar.

Check this page (and our solar seminar page) for project photos and updates.

Federal tax credits and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Public Opportunity Notice 1085 fund this project.
